Shaved ice or Hawaiian shave ice is an ice-based dessert made by shaving a block of ice and flavoring it with syrup and other sweet ingredients. Hawaiian shave ice is so fine that flavorings are absorbed into the ice rather than settling to the bottom of the cup as with a snow cone. Think of it as a gourmet snow cone with tantalizing tropical flavors. Hawaii’s shave Ice tradition was brought to the island in the early 1900s by Japanese immigrants and has since become the iconic frozen treat of the islands. Get your brain freeze on with the Gecko Girlz, one of the best Big Island shave ice spots. Sample some of the delectable artisanal creations, 100% Made in Hawaii only using pure cane sugar, never corn syrup. We are personally in love with the “Island Breeze” which consists of Mango, Coconut and Guava…but you really can’t go wrong with any of their Hawaiian Style combos to be honest. You can even build your own shave ice if you feel like getting creative yourself. Open daily from 12pm – 9pm at the Coconut Grove Marketplace in beautiful Kailua-Kona.
Farm To Table Lunch at Gingerhill Farms
Scandinavian Shave Ice has been a Kona landmark since 1991. Located in the heart of Kailua Village just minutes away from Kailua Pier. “Scandi’s” is know by locals as “Da Best Shave Ice In Paradise”. They offer unique flavors such as Love in a Cup, Blue Hawaii, and Haupia (Hawaiian Coconut Pudding) as well as all of the classics. Try it served with ice cream or frozen yogurt in the middle, customer’s choice of three out of 65 flavors and then topped with a snow cap of sweetened condensed milk or coconut cream. This is probably the most unique treat you have ever had.
It may be hard to pick a favorite flavor combo because they’re all so good! One thing is for certain though…when on the Big Island you simply must cool off with one of these favorite Hawaiian frozen treats.
